Celebrating zines, small press & all things DIY in Auckland & Aotearoa since 2009
Q+A with Molawin Evangelista
August 28, 2015
Molawin is a photographer based in Auckland, New Zealand. He mainly specialises in commercial fashion and lifestyle photography but also has a passion for street photography and capturing city life. Molawin will be bringing a zine made exclusively for Auckland Zinefest!
What are your zines about? Are there any common themes throughout your zines?
Most of my zines are a collection of my photographic works and all usually have a certain theme to them. 'SAME' zine is a collection of images taken at completely different places and different times but somehow have ended up looking similar to each other. 'From Where We Stand' is a visual journal of Auckland City and illustrates the idea of finding beauty in everyday scenes. My new zine that is exclusive to Auckland zinefest called 'EMULSION' is basically a mash-up of different images shot on analogue film mediums and collaged together to make a single image. It consists of photos taken on vintage Polaroid cameras, Holga cameras and various 35mm cameras.
Why did you start making zines?
I have always preferred printed matter over digital publication so it was a natural move for me to showcase my works in physical form. Being a student, I am basically always broke so making zines was a fun and cheap alternative for me to display my work in the way I wanted it to be displayed.
What do you want readers to feel or think about while looking at your zine?
I basically want people to get inspired to get out and explore their environment, both photographers and non-photographers.
What are you most excited for at Auckland Zinefest?
Meeting a bunch of different creatives, making new friends and getting a bunch of inspiration from Auckland's creative scene!
